I would definately wait......it was 40 degrees here in NE PA last night..........June I would trim it.  if it comes back, I would not trim it next fall as all of that protects the root...............trim only after the last chance of frost has passed.  When the walnuts trees open their leaves fully, the last chance of frost has past.
