I used to sign up in a flurry with all my friends, play with them for a week, then delete them. In my experience the fun wears off rather quickly. Now, I ignore them unless they have some sort of real purpose…not just biting zombies for hours on end.

The change may be related to that but the vagaries of FB are always a mystery.
