This happens a lot. One of my old bosses actually told me not to submerge myself in my job totally and to make sure I kept a little distance from it. He told me to delegate whenever possible because otherwise, people will keep you in that position and hire over you, because you do it so well they can’t imagine anyone else doing it better or don’t want to destabilize it. Then he pointed out a few very specific examples of people it had happened to. It was definitely interesting to know.
