I'm white. I've walked alone through areas people consider ghettos in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Brooklyn, New Orleans and Chicago. I've found that if you greet people with a smile and show respect, you generally receive the same treatment. The same advice holds for the halls of the US Capitol and the small towns of Nebraska.
