The invention of the lap steel guitar in 1885 is most-commonly attributed to Joseph Kekuku. Lap steel Guitars are similar to standard guitars but have some important differences: the strings of a lap steel guitar are raised at the bridge and neck ends, usually one half inch off the fingerboards; the strings of regular guitars have their strings directly against the fingerboards. Because the strings of lap steel guitars are raised and are too high to touch the fingerboard, regular fretted-type playing is impossible; consequently, the number of chords available to lap steel guitars are less than regular fretted guitars.
