How to Thicken a Soup
On chilly days, nothing can warm your stomach better than a nice warm bowl of soup, but what if you find out that the soup you made isn’t thick at all? A bland and thin soup can ruin a perfectly good meal, but there are ways on how you can solve this problem. Here are a few tips to thicken soup.
What You’ll Need:
Soup
Vegetables
Food processor
Water
Flour or cornstarch
Bread crumbs
Cream or milk
Using Flour Or Cornstarch
This is one of the quickest and cheapest methods to thicken soup. Making s cornstarch or flour paste is pretty easy as long as you know what to do.
thick soup
Get a small mixing bowl, then measure in two tablespoons of cornstarch or flour.
Add some warm water into the cornstarch or flour, enough to dissolve. It’s best to add it bit by bit; you don’t want this paste to be too runny.
Mix the water and powder using a whisk or fork. Afterwards, add in a cup of warm water.
Let the soup simmer on medium or low heat, until it thickens.
Puree Some Veggies
If you’re making a vegetable-based soup, then this is a great and healthy idea. Here’s what to do.
Turn down the soup’s heat to medium-low. Using a ladle, fish around in the soup bowl for the vegetables mixed in it. Carrots and potatoes are good ones.
Put the veggies in a food processor and grate until fine. If you like your soup to be a bit chunky, don’t process the veggies thoroughly.
Stir in the veggies and mix until the soup thickens.
If there aren’t any veggies mixed in the soup yet, get a medium-sized potato, and peel and wash it. Grate it with the processor before you mix it in the soup. Got mashed potatoes in your fridge? Use it to thicken the soup.
Mix In Some Dairy
If your soup is cream based, like cream of mushroom or cream of chicken, then your best tactic is to add some more dairy in your soup. Not only will the soup thicken, but it will become richer and the flavor will be enhanced. Cream and regular milk are favorites, but if you don’t want these, try using evaporated milk. Add in a cup, then let the soup simmer on medium heat.
Use Bread Crumbs
Bread crumbs are often added to soup to enhance its texture and flavor, but you can also add some if you’re aiming to thicken it. Just get some dried white bread or whole grain bread crumbs and grind them in a food processor. Afterwards, mix in the ground crumbs in the soup. If you have plenty of leftover bread, this is a great idea.
If you’ve got bland soup boiling on the stove, don’t fret. Just try these easy tips and you’ll find yourself with a bowl of hot and thick soup that’ll taste delicious.
