How to Boil Corn on the Cob
Corn on the cob is a flexible side dish and it’s so easy to cook and enjoy. Bring out the cob’s natural freshness and goodness with a few simple tricks to truly round up your meal. Here’s how.
Preparing the Cob
Peel the corn cob right just before you boil it.
To peel, grasp the tip of one of the outer layers and peel back the husk. Use your other hand to hold onto the corn firmly, and once all the layers are peeled off, snap them off from each other in one swift movement.
Remove the corn silks by getting a wet paper towel and wiping down the corn cob from end to end. The cleaner the cob from silks, the easier to eat.
Microwave Method
The microwave method is recommended if you’re only boiling at the maximum, four ears of corn. If you’re boiling any more than that, use the other methods mentioned below.
boiled corn
Put the corn cobs in a microwave-safe dish.
Add two tablespoons of room temperature water in the dish with the corn.
Cover the dish with plastic wrap, folding back an opening to act as a steam vent.
Program the microwave on high, and cook for four to six minutes. The stronger your microwave, the lower the number should be.
Once it’s done, take out the dish and use a pair of tongs to carefully pull back the plastic wrap. Let cool for several minutes before eating.
Pressure Cooker Method
If you have a pressure cooker at home, you can cook a bigger batch of corn than the microwave. The most you can cook per batch is six ears of corn, good for a medium-sized party.
Put a cup of water in the pressure cooker.
Put the steamer basket, also known as a trivet at the bottom, and line up the ears of corn on top.
Program the pressure cooker to medium-high heat.
Once it has come to pressure, lower the heat to medium and allow to cook for another two or three minutes.
Stovetop Method
Place the ears of corn in a large pot, and fill with cold tap water until the cobs are covered.
Set the pot on the stove and bring to a boil.
Once the water is boiled, the corn cobs are boiled as well.
Another method is to fill the pot halfway with water, boil the water and drop in the corn cobs once the water is already boiling. Cover the pot and allow another five to seven minutes for the corn to cook fully.
