How to Husk Corn
Corn on the cob with hot butter on it is a delectable treat, but before you can enjoy it, you must first know how to get the husk off. This green and hairy layer hides the delicious golden kernels, but don’t fret, because removing them isn’t so difficult. Here’s what to do.
What You’ll Need:
Fresh ear of corn
Container for the husk (plastic bag, trash can or blanket)
Sharp knife
Water for rinsing
Procedure:
Ready your materials, including the container where you’ll be placing the husks. Use a plastic bag or trash can, anything that can catch the silky threads. If you’re husking a lot of corn, using a blanket is better. This can be a messy task, so having the trash container near you will help you clean up later.
Hold the ear of corn in your dominant hand. If you’re right-handed, use your right hand, and vice versa. Position your hand so that it grips the middle of the cob.
Grab the husks at the ear’s top, the one where you can see the brown and silky hairlike material. You need to grab only enough amount that you can strip out. The husks are arranged in layers around the corn, and has several leaf parts, so you’ll have to remove them portion one at a time.
Using your other hand, pull down the husks from the cob, stripping them from the corn, until you reach the base. Rip and free them, and put in the trash bag. If you want, you can set them aside and use them for craft or other purposes. Repeat this step until all the husks are removed.
Look at the cob’s top, the one without any filled out kernel, and cut it off. Do the same for the bottom part. If it’s brittle enough, maybe you can snap off the top using your hand.
Rinse the ear of corn. Water pressure helps remove any remaining silk.
Put the husked corn in a container and clean up the area.
Some Tips:
It’s possible to get the green leaves and the hair out at the same time, helping you save time.
If you’re roasting or grilling the corn, keep a husk layer on, to protect the corn, but allow smoke to penetrate.
Freshly-picked corn tastes better. The sooner it’s cooked, the sweeter its taste will be.
Corn is a delicious and nutritious side dish that will improve any dish. With these easy husking steps, you’ll always get to enjoy it to the fullest.
