How To Call A White-Tailed Deer
The white-tailed deer is one of the most endearing of all deer. For hunting purposes, the usual calls will not work for this deer. Instead, you need to employ a wide variety of tones and calls to successfully attract the white-tailed deer.
Tools/Materials Required
Antler rattler
Grunt tube
Deer decoy
Dove decoys
Hose
The Tending Grunt
This sort of grunt works best to attract deer to your stand. It is usually used by bucks during the mating season. Characterized by a series of seven grunts in quick succession, this type of grunt is used by a buck to stop a passing deer.
The Antler Rattler
This can be used to give the impression of two deer fighting or a deer rubbing against a tree trunk. You can even make an antler by using wooden stakes and pushing them into the soil in the shape of a V. Most deer only rattle for a limited amount of time; hence, it is best not to overdo it.
The Grunt Tube
You can use a grunt tube to make low grunting noises to attract the white-tailed deer. If you are grunting from the tree stand, a good idea is to use a hose for better effect. Attach the grunt tube to a hose and put the hose near ground level. When you make the noise, the deer will think the sound is coming from the ground. This way the deer won’t look up, and you will get a clear shot.
Tackling A Grazing Deer
If you find that your white-tailed deer is grazing and its head is low on the ground, this is the perfect time to whistle softly at it. More often than not the deer will look up and stay still for a while.
The Calling Process
It is always better to start the calling process by keeping the volume low. Then you can go on to make it higher. If you create a high-volume sound at the beginning, you could scare an approaching deer away.
After The Shot
Chances are your shot may not have totally paralyzed the deer, and it may start running away. You can stop the deer in its tracks by making a grunting noise with the help of the grunt tube. The deer is likely to stop for a moment, thus giving you a good shot.
The Snorting Call
Another great technique to stop a running white-tailed deer is to use a snorting sound. A snorting noise will almost immediately make the deer stop right in its tracks. However, the deer will also be extremely alert at this stage, which means you need to be agile in taking the shot.
Using Decoys For Attraction
You need to check with the local state laws to ensure that using decoys is permissible. You could create a scene of sorts with two deer facing each other and a turkey in the middle. This is sure to get a white-tailed deer’s attention. You may even sprinkle a bit of the doe scent nearby for maximum effect.
