How to Build Sliding Windows for Deer Blind
A deer blind is a device that helps hunters conceal themselves during the hunting season. Most deer blinds have open windows so that hunters will be able to view what’s happening outside without revealing their position. Insects and other pests, however, can also enter this open window and disrupt a hunter’s concentration. The solution: Create a sliding window for your deer blind!
Required Materials
Sliding window installation kit (this can be bought from any home or auto improvement store)
Rags
Waterproofing sealant (optional)
Camouflage colors (green, brown, black, yellow ochre) spray paints
Pencils/Markers
Required Tools
Screwdrivers
Masking tape
Tape measure
Cordless drill
Work gloves
Instructions
Take measurements of your deer blind window. Bring these to any local home improvement stores or auto improvement stores that specialize on windows. Have them assemble a window that matches the size of your deer blind windows. You have the option of using aluminum or wooden frame windows.
If your deer blind is the knock-out type, then assemble it first so that your work area will be easier. If you have the elevated version, just install the deer blind without the scaffolding.
Screen windows provide you with ventilation but lack protection from rain. Glass windows will protect you from outside elements, but will also stop ventilation. They might also give away your position because they reflect sunlight and glare.
Spray paint the frame of your sliding window with the camouflage colors of your deer blind. If you are using the screen window, then you might want to spray paint them also. Allow to dry.
Inside the deer blind, align the frame of your sliding window and secure it with masking tape.
Using your pencil, mark the areas where you are going to put the screws.
Drill holes on your marked areas.
Follow the instructions on how to install your sliding window kit. They are usually included by the manufacturer of your sliding window. Usually, these windows come disassembled. Do not make the mistake of assembling them before the installation. You should first align the frame holes with the holes you made in your deer blind.
This part is optional and is advisable only for glass or fiberglass sliding windows. If you decide to waterproof your sliding window, clean the surface area of your frame and the deer blind window using damp rags. When dry, apply some waterproofing sealant to your frame.
Secure the frame with the screws included in your installation kit.
Attach the glass or screen windows and voila! You are done with your sliding window installation!
Tips and Warnings
For safety reasons, always wear your work gloves. It will not only protect you from injuries, but also make it easier for you to lift and assemble your deer blind.
When drilling holes, take note that the circumference of the holes you drill should be a little smaller than your screw. This assures that you will have a snug and secure fit.
If you applied waterproofing sealant to your sliding windows, first tighten all of the screws using just your fingers, then tighten them down again in a crisscross pattern using your screwdriver. Tightening in this way, instead of consecutively going from one screw to the next adjacent one, helps assure you that the seal forms evenly as the window is secured into place.
