How To Gut A Deer
You have shot a deer and are planning a tasty dinner treat. Gutting is an important process that has to be correctly performed if you want tasty venison. Here are the essential steps to successful gutting.
Tools/Materials Required
Sharp knife
Cloth for cleaning
Plastic waste bag
Jug with 1 gallon capacity
Hose pipe
Step One: Cutting The Private Parts
First, you need to cut out the testicles and the penis (of a male deer) or the vaginal portion (of a female deer). Next, make a hole around the anal region by carving around it with the knife.
Step Two: Lifting The Skin
Point your fingers toward the chest portion of the deer and make a peace sign with your fingers. Then use your fingers to lift off the skin from the stomach region. Place your knife between your fingers and slide the knife upward till you find the chest bone. While doing so, make sure you don’t cut the gut as it can result in a foul smell. Push the gut away as you lift the skin.
Step Three: Cutting Across The Rib Bone
Once you have reached the chest bone area, make a cut right through the join where the ribs come together. This will free up the upper portion of the deer, facilitating easy cutting of the remaining areas.
Step Four: Dissecting The Pelvis
After you have cut through the rib bone, you need to make a cut right through the central portion of the pelvic region. Basically, you need to make a split in between.
Step Five: Cutting The Windpipe
Once you have made a cut in the lower pelvic region, it is time to make an incision midway in the throat. You will need to cut off the windpipe as well as the esophagus. Keep the knife steady while doing this.
Step Six: Holding It Sideways
After you have cut off the windpipe, you need to tilt the deer sideways to check which organs need further cutting. If you find organs filled up, just cut them away without making perforations inside. Pull out the anus through the hole made earlier. You can use a garbage bag to close up tubes.
Step Seven: Tilting It Up
Once you have separated all the internal organs from the deer’s body, tilt the deer upward until all the blood drains out. You will find that the gut and all its contents will also flow down.
Step Eight: Spray With Water
Use a hose pipe to spray the insides of the deer with plenty of water. This will cleanse the meat of any residual dirt or waste matter. Hang the deer upside down on a tree before doing this, as it becomes easier to spray the water.
