How to Construct a Duck Blind
Although the art of building duck blinds dates back to the 15th century, it is still relevant to duck hunters. Constructing a duck blind, though it might seem a daunting task, can be accomplished with the help of a few easy-to-follow instructions. A permanent duck blind can make the sport easier, with the ducks getting used to the structure over time.
Required Materials
2 4″ Wood board
Chicken wire or mesh wire
Camouflage rope of about 30-50 ft
Concealing materials such as hay or elephant grass
Wood nails
Paint
Required Tools
Saw
Chalk line or level
Tape measure
Hammer
Pliers
A pocket knife or a multipurpose knife
Hand shears
Pencil or a marker
Instructions
Cutting the wood board: Measure the board along its middle and cut it into two equal pieces using a saw, across its width.
Streamlining the wood: Use the saw to strip off some portion of the wood and shape it into a stake-like shape at one end to enable easy driving into the soil.
Measuring the wire: Measure the chicken wire or the mesh wire from outside to inside up to a length of 61/2″. Mark it.
Placing the board: Place the board lengthwise until the 61/2″ mark, and fold the wire so as to cover all four sides of the board.
Securing the board: Nail the wire along the board to secure the two together. Hammer the nails halfway through, and bend the remaining portion to secure the wire at the desired place.
Placing the second board: Repeat the same action (step 4) with the other piece of the board at another end of the chicken wire or mesh wire. Repeat step 5 to secure the wire with the board.
Bending the wire: Bend the wire with the help of pliers above the 61/2″ mark in a straight line so that it is at right angles to the boards.
Gathering the duck blind to position: Get hold of the construction so far and erect the entire setup ready to install.
Fixing the duck blind structure: Drive the two boards into the ground up to the level required, thereby securing the structure so that it will hold even after you have left it.
Gathering the duck blind materials: Gather the duck blind concealing materials, and weave them in the wire starting from below.
Camouflaging the duck blind: Use camouflage ropes and concealing materials to entirely cover the duck blind and make it merge into the surroundings.
The final touch: Paint the stakes brown for a perfect camouflage.
Tips and Warnings
You can build the duck blind to give you cover from direct sunlight while you are enjoying your game. For this, increase the length of the folded wire, cover it with a green plastic, and use the camouflaging directions as stated earlier.
