How to Keep Grass Green
Having brown and wilted lawn grass can be an eyesore and leave your lawn looking like the Gobi desert. Make your garden look more vibrant by keeping the grass greener on your side of the fence. Here’s how.
Type of Grass
Keeping your grass green starts from choosing what type of grass to seed in your lawn. Favor local grass variety over any other grass variety, as local varieties have a bigger chance of surviving and flourishing on its own turf. Always ask your local gardener for his or her recommended grass type.
Take care of your grass by regularly watering in the morning. You don’t actually need a lot of water when taking care of grass. Even during a drought, many healthy lawns can do fine up to two months with only a quarter of inch of water every two weeks.
Reseeding
Reseeding should be done early fall using a spreader so that it will be evenly distributed. What will reseeding achieve? Well you’ll have thicker grass, which will replace the dying grass. It will prevent weeds from muscling their way in and you’ll even attain better insect control. If you have trouble with only specific parts of your lawn, you can use grass patch seeds and monitor that part until it becomes healthier and becomes a part of the lawn as a whole.
Fertilize Your Grass
Fertilizing your plants and grass is like feeding them food. Soil will lose its nutrients if not given a helping hand, so make sure you fertilize your grass regularly. Natural environmental reasons also contribute to poor soil health. Fertilize in the late fall, after summer or after winter. Learn more about how to fertilize your lawn here.
Aeration
Aerating your lawn means your grass will get its daily dose of water and air. If your lawn soil is packed and dry, maybe it’s time to aerate it. Annual aeration should be enough. Learn more about how to aerate your lawn here.
Get Rid of Weeds
Weeds are the number one enemy of lawn grasses, so keeping vigilant in keeping them away ensures the health of your lawn. Apply pre-emergent weed killer before early spring. Different weeds require different approaches in getting rid of them, so look up the proper ways how. Weeds if left unchecked could quickly spread, grow and choke out your lawn grasses entirely.
Mowing Grass
While it’s good to have thick grass in your lawn, having them too thick can block out the sun and deprive their roots of moisture. Maintaining length of lawn grass should do well from one to three inches in length.
