How to Clean Oil Off of a Driveway
Over the years, your driveway will be subject to a lot of oil spatters courtesy of the comings and goings of your cars. After a while, your garage won’t look quite as nice, plus it’s dangerous too! Oil can be quite difficult to remove , since the garage concrete will absorb some of the oil. Here’s how you can clean the oil off your driveway.
Cola Method
Get enough cola to cover the oil-stained areas and leave it on overnight. Make sure that no cars are parked on the driveway and no one steps on it while there’s cola there.
Mix dish washing liquid with warm water until you’ve worked up a good lather. You can also use used laundry water for this.
Rinse the cola and the oil stain using the soapy water.
Rinse off the soapy water using a garden hose. You can also use boiling water to rinse off the stain, just be careful not to burn yourself.
Powder Method
Use a generous amount of baking soda, cornmeal or sawdust to layer above the oil stains. If the stain you’re getting rid of is dry, sprinkle some water on top of the stain first before putting the powder of choice on to make a paste.
Use a push broom to scrub the paste into the oil stain.
Rinse off using a garden hose.
Powdered Detergent
Sprinkle powdered laundry detergent generously all over the oil stain. Leave it for some minutes to soak up as much of the oil as it can.
Pour boiling water over the affected area, careful not to burn yourself as you do so.
Scrub away the remaining stain using a push broom.
Concrete Cleaner
Fortunately for many of us, there are people out there who have anticipated the problem of oil-stained driveways. There are products out there, like Garage and Driveway Cleaner that are readily available for use. Simply follow the instructions or combine using the concrete cleaner with other methods of removing oil stains.
You’ll be needing quite a bit of elbow grease when getting rid of driveway oil stains, but it’ll be worth it if it earns you a clean garage and driveway again. Good luck!
