How to Clean a Retainer
A retainer is designed to hold your teeth in its correct alignment after your braces have been removed. Taking care of your retainer is very important to prevent dental complications caused by improper hygiene. Here are some tips you can follow when cleaning your retainer.
Things You’ll Need:
Bowl
Warm water
Toothbrush with soft bristles
Toothpaste
Mouthwash
Cleaning solution for retainers
Steps:
Remove your retainer and rinse it with warm water.
Soak your retainer in a bowl of dental solution for retainers. Follow the instructions for the solution properly. Usually, you have to let your retainer sit in the solution for about 15 minutes to half an hour.
Wash your retainer under running water.
Brush your retainer using a soft-bristled toothbrush with ample amount of toothpaste. A toothbrush with hard bristles may scratch and damage your retainer.
Rinse well.
You may also opt to soak your retainer in a mouthwash to have a fresher and cleaner feel when you wear them again.
Tips:
If you won’t wear your retainer after cleaning it, place it in its case. Avoid wrapping it in tissue paper to avoid accidentally damaging your retainer.
Cleaning your retainer at least once a day will keep it clean and prevent bacteria from building up.
There are various cleaning solutions for retainers. Some of them are Denta Clean, Retainer Fresh and Retainer Brite.
For home solutions, you may try to mix vinegar and warm water. Soak your retainer in the solution for about 5 minutes and then rinse well.
To provide complete care of your retainer, visit your dentist regularly and have it cleaned. This way, stains and other build ups on your retainer will be effectively removed.
Don’t use hot water. It may deform or damage your retainer.
An alcohol based mouthwash and cleaning solution may also ruin your retainer. Avoid soaking your retainer longer than indicated in the instructions.
Clean your retainer every time you brush your teeth. This way, it’ll be easier for you to remember to clean it.
Retainers, braces and other dental appliance shouldn’t keep you from smiling. Wear that pretty smile together with a clean retainer. As one quote goes, People seldom notice old clothes if you wear a big smile.
