How to Bend a Spoon
Do magicians who bend spoons “with their mind” excite you? You know it’s only a trick, but wouldn’t it be fun if you yourself can do this? Don’t worry, because bending spoon is pretty easy. You don’t need mind powers to achieve this!
What You’ll Need:
Old, inexpensive spoons that you can afford to bend
Table (preferably with tablecloth)
Audience
Preparing The Spoon
You need to subject the spoon’s neck to low-cycle fatigue, so it will be easily bent later on. Before your performance, bend the spoon’s handle back and forth, at the part where the bowl and the handle joins. What you should achieve is to weaken the metal, but not break the spoon. Keep bending it forward and backward repeatedly.
When the spoon is easily bendable, bent it back so that it looks normal and has an appropriate shape. It should look unaltered and straight to your audience.
Spoon Bending Trick One
Distract your audience or entertain them a bit about your “telekinetic powers”. Tell them about what you’re going to do, how you’re going to bend a spoon with “magic”. While doing this, direct their attentions somewhere else, as subtly, but effectively as you can. Making broad gestures with one hand is a good idea.
With your other hand, hide the bent spoon under the table. Then, ask the audience to close their eyes and direct their energies on the spoon.
With this distraction, bend the spoon as quickly as you can, using only one hand. One effective way is by putting the spoon against a surface (like your knee or the table), and pushing one thumb hard into the spoon’s neck. Another way is by jamming the thumb into the spoon’s bowl, while the fingers are on its neck. Put the handle’s back end against your hand’s heel.
Horizontally display the handle of the spoon, but at the same time hiding the fact that the spoon has already been bent. Using your top hand, rub the spoon, giving the illusion that “magic” is happening. To enhance the illusion, chant magic words or grunt slightly.
Extend the spoon’s bent end, so it looks drooped and bent.
Display the whole bent spoon. The astounded audience will applaud!
Spoon Bending Trick Two
Show the spoon to the audience, pulling on both ends to show that it’s intact. Tap it against something gently, such as the tabletop. Keep the spoon moving around.
Put the spoon and handle towards you, while the bowl points upwards, between the thumb and the first finger.
Rub gently and push the weak spot until it’s hot to the touch, for at least 20 seconds. Meditate or concentrate to add drama.
Help the spoon along by supporting it at the bowl’s tip, as you push and rub.
Allow the spoon to bend or bend it yourself, making it droop. If possible, look the bowl around quickly, several times, winding to the handle.
The spoon can break in two. If it does, go with it. Casually pinch your fingers over the break, loosening them gradually so the spoon looks bent. Hold it vertically, allowing the bowl to sag to one side. For the finale, drop the two halves dramatically, with a clatter. Your audience will be impressed.
