The Cambridge Dictionary defines the term as "lockdown" because of an emergency that prevents ordinary people from leaving or entering a place. The Oxford English Dictionary also states that " lockdown" is the act of controlling the entry and exit of the public to a designated area in an emergency. However, Khandaker Muntasir Hasan, an associate professor at the Institute of Modern Languages at Jagannath University, commented that the simple Bengali word for 'lockdown' is 'blocked' or 'kept in prison'. This view is supported by the former professor of English and Treasurer of Jagannath University. Kamaluddin Ahmed said , “ It is difficult to say the Bengali synonym of this word at the moment as it is new. But that could mean 'blockade.' "
