Mandatory Palestine (Arabic: فلسطين )Filasṭīn ; In Hebrew: פָּלֶשְׂתִּינָה ( א " ) _Pālēśtīnā (EY), " Erytz Israel" (land of Israel) here, was a geographical area separated from the southern Syrian part of the Ottoman Empire after World War I and administered by the British. Palestine was administered by the British Civil Administration from 1920 to 1948. At that time the region was known as Palestine. However, other names were also common, including Mandatory or Mandate Palestine , British Palestine and British Mandate of Palestine. The rise of the Arabs during World War I and the expedition led by General Edmund Ellenby drove the Turks out of the Levant. [2] Both sides had different interpretations of the agreement. The United Kingdom and France, on the other hand, are said to have divided the occupied territories under the Sykes-Picot Agreement, which is considered treason in the eyes of the Arabs. The situation is further clouded by the fact that the Belfort Declaration mentions a national homeland for Palestinian Jews. At the end of the war a new military administration called the Occupied Territories Administration was established. This administration was established in the former Ottoman Syria. The British received a mandate for Palestine from the League of Nations in June 1922. The mandate was introduced to govern the territories occupied by the former Ottoman Empire until it stood on its own two feet. [3] This part was directly under British rule till 1947. Another part was the Transjordan Emirate of the East Bank which was being run as a semi-autonomous region. The Hashemite family of Hejaz ruled Transjordan and gained independence in 1947. Adverse reactions to the nature of the mandate are evident in the discussion of the name of the region. According to the ninth session of the Standing Mandate Commission of the League of Nations: "Colonel Sims explained that the country was referred to by Europeans as 'Palestine' and the Arabs as 'Palestine'. The Hebrew name for the country was 'Land of Israel' The document will have the initials of the name (Jewish name) after "Palestine" in Hebrew. In retaliation, some Arab politicians have suggested that the country be called "Southern Syria" to show its close ties with another Arab state. During the British Mandate period, two major nationalist movements emerged in the region, one among the Jews and the other among the Arabs. Arabs and Jews compete against each other. Subsequently, Arab revolts took place in Palestine and the Jews revolted. The ensuing 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the 1949 Ceasefire Agreement. Newly formed Israel is formed by dividing the territory of Mandatory Palestine. The West Bank was annexed by Jordan and the Gaza Strip came under Egyptian military rule.
