Gates of Hell (Turkmen: Jähennem derwezesi, Җәхеннем дервезеси, the mouth of the Darvaza gas field) is a natural gas field in the city of Darwaza in Turkmenistan. It is called the gates of hell because it has been burning for a long time. Located in the Karakum Desert, the volcano is 79 m (226 ft) in diameter and 30 m (96 ft) long. Geologists set the volcano on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas and it has been burning continuously since 1971. Every year tourists come to Darwaza town to see the one night scene of 2010 volcano. 50,000 tourists have visited the place since 2009. The gas field covers an area of 5,350 m2 and the surrounding area is also famous for wild desert camping.
