Answer :

The wider end should go down into the water.  Some other suggestions are to take the pit from a very ripe avocado as it will be more likely to sprout.  Also, if the seed does not begin to sprout, try cutting off a small portion of the bottom of the seed this can help to sprout to grow faster.  You may have to try more than one seed before seeing a sprout.  Some seeds simply will not sprout.
