It is produced by all body systems which have an outlet to the outside. This means that your digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems all produce this sticky stuff. Any others produce a watery substance called serous fluid. These serous systems are always sterile and the others are not. Mucous has a job of trapping bacteria, pollen or even insects as it tries to prevent them from entering the body.
