Definition: A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer based tool that allows you to create, manipulate, analyze, store and display information based on its location.
Components of GIS:
1.Hardware- It is the computer on which GIS operates
2. Software- It provides the functions and tools needed to store, analyse, and display geographic information. Key components are a database management system (DBMS), tools for input and manipulation of geographic information, graphical user interface (GUI) for easy access to tools.
3. Data- Geographic data and related tabular data can be collected or brought from a commercial provider.
4. People- GIS users range from technical specialist who design and maintain system to those who use it to help them do their everyday work.
5. Methods- A successful GIS operates according to a well-designed plan and business rules, which are the models and operating practices unique to each organization.
