This is an Oklahoma bill and I live in Texas.Today Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in OK must be tied to a doctor by contract. This bill would eliminate that requirement. Thus, they could/would have standalone/independent practices.I'm unable to find a balanced discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of this, but as I understand it NPs want this freedom and feel qualified to practice medicine independently. Naturally they would.Doctors have much more medical training than NPs. I don't understand the extent a doctors exercises oversight/monitoring over an NP associated with him/her. To me, this is the critical issue. If doctors exercise a great deal of oversight I would think the current arrangement better for patients. If on the other hand, if doctors exercise little to no oversight over their NP. This would free NPs from a useless and expensive constraint.
