Aunt Josephine probably died in the third book, The Wide Window,although her body was never found and it is possible she actuallysurvived and went into hiding.She initially faked her death and left clues for theBaudelaire's to find her. When they did, they were returning toland when their boat was attacked by leeches since Josephine hadrecently eaten. Count Olaf arrived in time to rescue them fromdrowning. However, having irritated Count Olad by correcting hisgrammar he throws her overboard allowing the leeches to get her.Later, tattered remains of her life jacket are found and she ispresumed dead.
