Because Curley feels self-concious about his height and his wifeso he wanted to pick a fight with someone who was very big (whichmade him look powerful) but was also a bit stupid and would morethan likely be obedient to being hit by the boss's son. So heobviously chose Lennie, but George wanted to protect Lennie withoutgetting in the fight and he could see that Lennie was being moreemotionally hurt than physically hurt by Curley because Lenniecouldn't understand why he was picking a fight with him so Georgeinsisted that Lennie fought back. So when Lennie did fight back (heobviously doesn't know his own strength) fought back, but byaccident he crushed Curley's hand in the process.
