The roof protects the building from precipitation: rain and melting snow. It is a necessary part of almost any building structure. The tightness of the roof, resistance to wind, sunlight and even chemical resistance (in our times it matters - ecology) create some problem when choosing materials.
This is a problem of cheap and high-quality roofing, a problem because cheapness and quality usually conflict. Let's look at the main types of roofing materials and their properties so that you can choose the best one for your climate and the structure to be protected.
Shingles
The tiles resemble fish scales and are laid out so that the upper row closes the lower ones. It gives the building an attractive look and is very fashionable these days. There are different types of shingles when you look at them in terms of materials:
ceramic;
metal tile;
cement-sand;
bituminous.
Ceramic tiles are absolutely non-combustible and frost-resistant, do not collect moisture under the roof, and absorb sound. The disadvantage is its very heavy weight, requiring strong rafters. The metal tile has a very big advantage - light weight and low cost. The sound insulation of the metal tile is poor. In cement-sand tiles, the main advantage is the increase in strength over time, and the disadvantages are fragility and considerable weight.
Bituminous shingles (rubber-bitumen) have excellent tightness, flexibility on complex roofs, and an almost steep slope, if required, good soundproofing. The disadvantage is flammability and instability to sunlight. In winter, shingles cannot be installed. When choosing a tile, do not forget about the drainage system, drainpipes,plastic drainage systems , etc.
Corrugated board
Decking is a metal profiled sheet. Profiled folds give it high resistance to deformation. It is distinguished by its extraordinary installation speed and low cost. It is considered unaesthetic for housing, but it depends on the architect. It differs from other types of metal roofing (folded steel and copper) precisely in its flat bending strength.
Slate
Slate (Schiefer - German slate) is a well-known gray asbestos-cement corrugated roofing material. Cheaper, non-flammable. Can be used for outbuildings. There are two types of slate:
asbestos-cement;
bituminous.
Bituminous slate is actually not slate, but is called so only because of its wavy shape. It has various colors, which enhances its decorative effect. It is made of fibrous materials impregnated with resins and bitumen with stabilizing additives. Lightweight and flexible (can be used on slopes from 5 to 90 degrees). The disadvantage of this material is its fragility in frosty climates - 25 years. Unfortunately, it is flammable.
