How to Remove Keyboard Keys
Keyboard keys take the brunt of your work when you’re sitting in front of the computer. They’re also on the receiving edge of dirt, random detritus and accidental spills if you’re not careful. Here’s how you can remove your keyboard keys and how to fish anything from below it without going to the computer shop.
If you think you’re going to need sophisticated tools to remove keyboard keys, think again. In the case of normal keyboards, all you need is a metal paperclip. When it comes to laptop keys, you can simply use your finger. Just don’t forget to remember how the keys should be oriented. You can take a quick digital picture of their positions if you want to make sure.
Desktop Keyboards
Desktop keyboards are usually turned upside down to be “cleaned” but it really does nothing in the long run. Remove the keys first before cleaning. Here’s how.
Make sure that the keyboard keys are detachable by consulting on the manual that comes with the keyboard or checking online for a digital manual.
Take a metal paperclip and bend it in such a way that it will resemble the silhouette of a tulip. It should be curved all over, except at the last part of the two ends, which should be bent at a 45-degree angle to meet at one point, forming a pincer-like formation.
Insert one of the bent ends under the the key.
Insert the other end at the other side if the key. You may need to depress the key to push it through.
Once both ends are securely underneath the key, pull it gently but decisively upwards.
Use a keyboard vacuum cleaner or a soft damp rag to clean underneath the key.
Laptop Keyboards
Laptop keyboard keys may seem more daunting than desktop keyboards, but you only need to use your fingers to remove them. Again, if you’re unsure with what you’re doing, check the manual or take your keyboard to a specialist.
Use a finger to depress one side of the key.
Use another finger to gently pry off the key from the keyboard by pulling straight up.
Clean the underside of the key if you have to.
Doesn’t sound too hard now, right? With these simple tools and even simpler instructions, you can now remove keyboard keys without much trouble.
