How to Clean a Carburetor
An automobile runs through fuel, powering the engine, so it can move. The carburetor is the engine component responsible for converting fuel into power. Once it accumulates a huge pile of dirt and grime, it will have problems working properly. Keep your car in good running condition by cleaning the carburetor occasionally. The job is a bit tedious, but it’s nothing complex.
Remove the Carburetor
To have easy access to its components, you have to remove the carburetor from its slot. You can also clean it by removing the top portion, but extracting grime from the hard-to-reach areas is quite challenging. Taking out the carburetor is clearly the more convenient option. Here’s how:
Disconnect the wires and linkages connecting the carburetor to the other parts of the engine.
Once done, use a ratchet to loosen the four bolts, which hold he carburetor to its slot.
Lift the carburetor slowly. Jerking it off may damage the gasket and the other sensitive parts of the engine.
Move the carburetor to the manifold then pull it out.
With the carburetor removed, you can start the cleaning process. Bring it to your garage or any secure area, since some of the procedures are a bit messy.
Cleaning the Carburetor
When cleaning the carburetor, you’ll need a handful of tools. Ready a ratchet, a carburetor cleaner, an air compressor, and a piece of cloth. You can purchase the carburetor cleaner and the air compressor at all car parts shops.
Use a ratchet to remove the bolts of the carburetor casing.
Once the mechanism’s parts are exposed, spray them with carburetor cleaning. Leave no area unsprayed, so much of the dirt and grime are displaced.
Hook up an air compressor and fire away at the holes and the hard-to-reach areas.
Once done, wipe the carburetor with a moist cloth, which collects dirt sticking on the surface.
Gather the dirt extracted from the engine component. Throw them in the trash bin.
After cleaning the carburetor, put it back together then return it to the engine.
The Pre-Tuneup
With the carburetor returned, give your car a spin. It should run with faster acceleration and better fuel efficiency. The entire procedure may be tiring, but you’ll surely appreciate the noticeable improvement on your car’s performance. Besides, the carburetor doesn’t need frequent cleaning, so you can rest easy for quite a while after the procedure. Think of it as your car’s pre-tuneup.
