The glare of summer mornings can be quite unbearable especially if you live far from the beaches and the mountains. Most of the time, your eyes have to contend with the bright rays of the sun. The experience is further aggravated by the pretty high temperatures that go along with the summer months. Given that the climate is harsh, you have to protect yourself and your home from the harmful and uncomfortable effects of summer. You should make curtains for your home or your office to hold off the sun’s rays at bay.
A curtain or drape is a piece of cloth hung over a window to block light and the heat of sun rays. A lot of curtain types and designs can be found in decoration and home improvement stores. You can buy good quality curtains for low prices, which is why a lot of people buy curtains in bundles for all the windows of their home. In your case, if you have a lot of spare fabrics at home, you do not even need to spend for your curtains. You can simply make them yourself.
You should know have some knowledge about needlework to make curtains. You will have to fold and stitch the curtain’s fabric during the entire creation process. You should also be precise with your folds and stitches because a few errors can wreck the form of your curtain. To make things easier, you can use a sewing machine so that you can just focus on the folds. The sewing machine does most of the stitches for you.
Materials Used:
satin (or any fabric of your choice) – 5 meters
needle
thread
sewing machine
tape measure
scissors
pencil
Gather the fabric and sewing equipment
To create your own curtains, you should first gather all the materials that you need. Check your sewing kit if all of the aforementioned sewing equipment is present. If you lack a few components, you can go to a needlework store and purchase the items that you do not have. As for the fabric, you can go to a fabric shop and purchase about five meters of satin if you do not have that amount of fabric at home. You can also purchase other types of fabric such as cotton and linen if you plan to create different types of curtains.
Set the dimensions
When all of your materials are ready, get your tape measure and get the dimensions of your window. Add several inches to the length and width of your window and that will be the dimensions of your curtain. Once done, mark the dimensions of your curtain on the satin sheet with the use of a pencil. Cut the fabric according to the markings and the dimensions of your curtain.
Lines and Stitches
Once you have the fabric ready, place the fabric on the sewing machine’s sewing surface. Make equidistant folds on the top portion of the fabric to provide placeholders for curtain pins. Stitch each fold together with the use of your sewing machine. Once completed, stitch a straight horizontal line that runs the entire length of the curtain beneath the folds.
The Midway Cut
Make a vertical cut in the middle portion of your curtain then stop at the straight horizontal line that you just created. The opening will let you peek outside the window even when you are behind your curtain. Once done, you can now hang your new curtain on your window with the use of curtain pins and your curtain rod. Heat, brightness and privacy will not be an issue for you from this point on.
With your new curtains, you can finally sneer away the harsh effects of the summer season. Consider the curtain as your draping daytime blanket.
