How to Install a Curtain Rod
Putting curtains or draperies around your house is a good idea, but before it can be done, you must first put up curtain rods. This is an easy do-it-yourself home improvement project, but if it’s your first time to try it, you’ll need to keep in mind a few guidelines. Here’s how to properly install a curtain rod.
What You’ll Need:
Curtain rod
Curtains
Pencil
Screwdriver
Drill (preferably the cordless type)
Mounting brackets and screws
Measuring tape
Carpenter’s level
Procedure:
Check the place where you’re mounting the curtain rod. You can do this either on the wooden window casing, or you can mount it on the wall. If you’re putting it on the wood, you can use the regular bracket and screws, but if you want to install it on the wall, you must use hollow-wall anchors instead.

Get the rod and hold it up to the casing or the wall, determining the right height. Position the brackets at least three to six inches away from the edge of the window, depending on your personal preference. Use a carpenter’s level, placing it above the rod. This will make sure your rod is level.
Using a pencil, mark the top of the bracket’s placement, as well as the position of the bracket holes (the ones you’re going to drill) on the wall. Hold the rod against the wall while you’re doing this. Make sure the brackets are still level.
Get your cordless drill, and start drilling pilot holes into the pencil marks you made. Pilot holes are shallow holes that help you start the anchors or screws.
Once the pilot holes are positioned, insert the screws that came with the curtain rod set through the brackets. Then, position the bracket against the holes you made. Using a screwdriver, carefully embed the screws into the pilot holes, going deeper. As you do this, the brackets are attached to the wall.
Put the curtain through the rod, then put the rod on the brackets. You’re done!
Some Tips:
Make sure the screws are tightly attached to the casing, or else they’re not going to hold.
Check that your brackets are strong enough to support the weight of the curtain and the rod.
If you have a curtain rod that’s longer than 48 inches, install a center bracket aside from the two end brackets, for better support.
Curtains look great on any window, but to use them, you’ll need a sturdy curtain rod. Follow these steps and install a curtain rod the right way.
