Salam must be answered. This is because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning ) : Or give so in reply. (Surat an-Nisa '6) However, the answer to the written salutation can be given either by writing or by uttering it orally. So in case of question you can send the answer in writing if you want or if you find it difficult to write and send again and again, you can give the answer by yourself. In this case, it is not necessary to give him a verbal reply and it is not necessary to give him a reply or a phone call to reply to the salutation. Rather, it must be answered with a single face.
