Sahil or Sahel (Arabic: ساحل    ) A region of West Africa , which acts as a transitional region between the desert Sahara in the north and the humid tropics in the south. Light savanna grasslands and bushes are found in the coastal areas. It receives 4 to 6 inches of rainfall a year ; It rains mainly from June to September. Nomadic grazing and limited cultivation of groundnut and barley are possible in most areas. Desertification in coastal areas has accelerated due to prolonged droughts in the late 1970s and early 1980s , and population and livestock populations. Soil is losing moisture and the Sahara Desert is slowly engulfing the region , making famine a regular occurrence in most parts of the coast at present.
