Tus (Persian: توس )Orطوس) An ancient city in the Razavi Khorasan Province of Iran. To the ancient Greeks it was known as Susia (Ancient Greek: Σούσια) . Alexander the Great captured the city in 330 BC. Harunur Rashid, the Abbasid Caliph, fell ill and died in Tus in 606 AD while trying to quell the Greater Khorasan. Tus was almost completely destroyed during Genghis Khan's Mongol conquest of 1220-1259. Ferdowsi, the author of the Persian epic Shahnameh, is considered one of the most famous inhabitants of the city. His mausoleum was built in 1934 to mark the 1000th anniversary of his birth. Other prominent figures in the city of Tus include: Jabir ibn Hayyan , Asadi Tusi , Nizamul Mulk , al-Ghazzali , Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, and the famous Shia scholar Abu Jafar.
