They really do better in the ground.  Trimming is done in the spring and spraying with dormant oil fall & spring until bud stage then I just spray the trunk up to the bottom branch.  This smothers the bugs.  I don't do the open buds because you need bees to polunate.  Your trees might not have grown as much because of planter box.
