answer:Yes metformin does help control blood sugar. It does this by stopping the liver from creating glucose out of other molecules. It also very effective at reducing the risk of complications and mortality from diabetes. It has a lower risk of causing hypo’s than other diabetes meds and is not thought to cause weight gain unlike several other diabetes meds. That said it is not without side effects, like any other medication. The most common is an upset stomach but it can cause lactic acidosis, which is more seriosous, particulalry in people with inpaired liver and renal function.
