answer:Do you communicate with them? Do you offer to do what you can given the physical distance and whatever other limitations there are? I take it you are unable to help them move to a more beneficial place where they could get jobs and housing. If you are able to demonstrate empathy, that goes a long way in helping to alleviate things.
