No one knows for certain what gravity is.Newton explained how gravity acts but not what gravity is.Einstein's General Theory of Relativity says that gravity is thewarping of spacetime in response to the presence of mass andobjects then following the warped paths resulting in spacetime.This model has explained many previously known observations (e.g.the anomalies in Mercury's orbit) that Newton's work could not andmade predictions (e.g. bending of light paths by gravity, blackholes) nobody could have otherwise imagined.However even the explanation of General Relativity about gravitymay not be complete or totally correct. If Quantum Mechanics andGeneral Relativity can someday be successfully combined it mayagain be necessary to change our understanding of gravity.
