Gantt chart used in Production Planning & Control:
[1] Gantt chart is a basic tool used for both loading and scheduling.
[2] Gantt chart is developed by the Henry Gantt, an American Engineer.
[3] Gantt chart is consists of simple rectangular grid, divided by series of parallel horizontal and vertical lines.
[4] Vertical lines divided the chart in to units of time. The scale units can be years, moths, weeks, days or hours according to duty for which chart is required.
[5] The horizontal lines divided the chart into sections, which can be used to represent either work tasks or work centers.
Advantages of Gantt chart:
[1] Gantt Chart is simple graphical display technique, suitable for less complex situations
[2] Gantt charts are extremely easy to understand.
[3] It can quickly reveal the current or planned situation to all concerned.
[4] It does not provide any rules for choosing but simply presents a graphical technique for displaying results (and schedule) and for evaluating results (make span, idle time, waiting time, machine utilization, etc.)
[5] There is clarity in communicating important shop information by using Gantt chart
Disadvantages of Gantt chart:
[1] The Gantt chart must be updated periodically to account for new jobs.
[2] It is used for communicate relatively less information.
[3] Lack of adequate depiction of interrelationship between the separate tasks.
(It means how the ability to start one task depends upon the successful completion of other tasks.)
GANTT CHART: It is graphical tool which provides graphical presentation of activities of production section with reference to the time scale for effective control of PPC. A Gantt chart is "the earliest and best known type of control chart especially designed to show graphically the relationship between planned performance and actual performance. This chart lists the tasks to be performed on the vertical axis, and time intervals on the horizontal axis. Gantt chart is a project planning tool that can be used to represent the timing of tasks required to complete a project. Because Gantt chats are simple to understand and easy to construct, they are used by most project managers for all but the most complex projects.
Application in PPC: It represents graphically on a time scale as to when certain operation would be performed. It is also useful in recording the progress of the schedule.
Example of GANTT chart for production activity. An example of typical Gantt chart is shown in following figure in which various departments or sections of the industry shown at one side and comparison of actual and planned work shown in front of respective department or section.
Advantages of GANTT chart
1. Easy to understand the progress of the task or work to be done.
2. Gantt chats are simple to understand and easy to construct
3. Shows graphically the relationship between planned performance and actual performance.
4. Helps for production control by showing difference between planned and actual progress.
5. Changes in schedules can be done easily at minimum cost.
Disadvantages of GANTT chart
1. It gives limited information about the activities. Suitable only for simple projects
2. Updating chart with large number of activities is difficult and time consuming.
3. Charts with complex activities and projects are difficult to use.
4. Does not show effect of delays in activities and its effect on completion of project
Gantt chart used in production planning and control. Gantt Chart is a project planning tool that can be used to represent the timing of tasks required to complete a project. Because Gantt chats are simple to understand and easy to construct, they are used by most project managers for all but the most complex projects. 1. The Gantt chart is actually modified bar chart in which horizontal bars are drawn for each activity in proportion to the time required for completing it. 2. It is frequently used to keep track of multiple machine schedules. 3. This chart provides an immediate comparison between schedule and reality (i.e. planned work and actual progress of work.) 4. This is achieved simply by marking the planned work and the actual progress of work on the chart. 5. A cursor attached to Gantt chart can be moved across the chart to compare between the actual progress and planned work till any particular date. 6. A typical Gantt chart is shown in following figure.
Advantages of Gantt chart :
1. It is simple graphical display techniques , suitable for less complex situations.
2. It is extremely easy to understand.

4. It can quickly reveal the current or plan situation to all concerned.
Disadvantages of Gantt chart :
1. The Gantt chart must be updated periodically to account for new jobs.
2. It is used for communicate relatively less information.
3. Required greater time to maintain.
4. Lack of adequate depiction interrelationship between the separate tasks.
