Working of CRDI system: High pressure pump provides high pressure fuel to the common rail. The common rail stores the fuel and maintains a constant pressure in the common rail line (approximately 1500 bars.). This pressure is continuously available at injectors. The injection pressure is independent of engine speed. The quantity of fuel injected in the combustion chamber is controlled by actuating solenoid valve in the injector. As solenoid is energized, injection begins. Injector pulse width, multiple injections and duration of injection – all are controlled by EDC of CRDI system. The system pressure is controlled by means of a pressure sensor. Pilot injection and possibly a second, third injection is achieved by repeatedly activating solenoid valve, whereas the injection rate can be modified by controlling the nozzle needle movement.
