Transformer works on the principle of mutual inductance. When an alternating voltage V1 is applied to the primary winding of a transformer, an alternating flux φ is set up in the core. This alternating flux links with both the windings and induces self-induced emf E1 in the primary winding and mutually induced emf E2 in the secondary according to Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction.

Working principle of transformer : Transformer works on the principle of mutual electromagnetic induction. When AC voltage is applied to the primary winding of a transformer it causes ac current to flow through primary winding which in turn produces alternating flux in the core. This changing flux links with the secondary winding and according to Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, an emf is induced in the secondary winding. The current flows in the secondary circuit if load is connected.
