Why does the cat step on the place before going to bed?

Friends (also cats) claim that it is a remnant of a milk step when they massage their mother's chest to make milk flow. I don't think so, because they have their claws pulled out. I read somewhere that they chase snakes, also a genetic predisposition. So how is it really? Thanks

It's definitely an atavism. For example, a dog turns around several times before going to bed. This is said to be because they once "trampled" the grass to lie down. Before going to bed, a dog tends to scratch the bed. My cats also walked as you describe. With their claws pulled out, they "fluffed" the crib. Opinions on this behavior vary, as it is "really" best known to the cats themselves. : D
