How to Write a Check
Taking care of your finances is crucial especially now that you’re earning your own money. You now have bills to take care of and a bank account to maintain and update regularly.
One of the best way to manage your finances is to write and issue a check. This type of financial transaction is important because you may put yourself at risk for more debt by issuing a bouncing check. Your account may not have enough funds and the bank may deny your check in the process.
To avoid these mishaps, you should learn how to write a check properly. Just follow these simple steps:
Following any format, write either the present date or a future one if you will be giving a post-dated check. This will ensure that the person receiving the check cannot encash it before that particular date.
Next, indicate the name of the individual or company that will be receiving the check. This should be written next to the line that says “Payable to” or “Pay to the Order of.”
Write the numerical dollar amount you wish to give to the recipient. Put it on the space that has a dollar sign ($). It should look like this: $100.00.
Indicate the same amount, this time in word format for whole dollars. Use a fractional figure if the amounts are less than a dollar. Write a straight line to fill-up the space on the line and end it with the word “Dollar.” It should look like this: One hundred —— Dollars.
Put your signature at the lower right part of the check.
Put every detail like check number, date issued, payee and payment amount in your checkbook.
Do some math. Subtract the figure from the total so you will have the balance or money left in your current account.
Reminders:
Your bank will issue a fine once you issue a bouncing check. Make sure you have enough funds to write all those checks. To ensure accuracy, take note of all deposits and transactions by writing them all down.
If you will be issuing a post-dated check, notify the recipient so he or she won’t be surprised if and when the bank doesn’t acknowledge the check immedietely.
Destroy any unused ones or voided checks plus deposit slips to avoid counterfeiting.
Just follow the tips mentioned above and you will be writing and handing out those checks in no time.
