How to Steal a Base
One of the most exciting things about baseball is stealing bases. With proper timing and good skills, you’ll be able to go from one base to another without so much effort. Here are some tips you can follow to steal a base.
Take your cue from the pitcher. Understanding the pitchers movements and gestures will help you know the right time to move and steal a base. When you see a right handed pitcher turns to you, he’d probably throw the ball at the infielder on your base. Don’t steal. When his right hand goes up and prepares to pitch, be ready to move. You’ll find it hard to steal when the pitcher is a lefty as he has to face you when he pitches. He’ll be able to see you move and read your gestures, but you’ll be able to see his too. When you know how to read your pitcher’s movements, whether he may be a lefty or a righty, stealing a base won’t be a problem.
Take a lead off. You can either use a walking lead or a stationary lead. Most players choose to have a stationary lead. Once the pitcher prepares to pitch, take a couple of strides away from the base and wait until the pitcher releases the ball.

Keep your body as low as possible. This way, the infielder will have a harder time tagging you than when you keep your body upright.
Learn how to dodge. Dodging will improve your reflexes. It’ll also increase your chances of getting to the next base faster and reduce your chances of being tagged.
Stealing a base requires right timing, fast reflexes and a good understanding of the pitcher’s actions. Keep in mind that no pitchers are alike. When trying to steal a base, make sure to observe the pitcher very well. With enough practice, you’ll eventually have our own way of stealing a base, but for now, you can stick to these basic steps.
