It is mustahab to listen to the Qur'an and remain silent while reciting it. However, there are two opinions on whether it is obligatory to listen. According to the correct opinion, it is not obligatory to listen only at other times except during prayers. This is the opinion of (most) scholars. However, it is advisable for a Muslim to listen quietly during the recitation of the Qur'an and not to pay attention to anything other than work or necessity. This is to give respect and dignity to the Qur'an. On the other hand, there is no difficulty in turning on the Quranul Kareem radio while you are at home or outside the house , while you are asleep or awake. However, there should be no hustle and bustle around the recitation of the Qur'an , or noise , shouting or extensive talk, or in any inappropriate place. In that case, it is reasonable to turn off the radio. This includes the command to show respect and dignity to the Qur'an. Shaykh 'Abd al-'Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah be pleased with him) was asked: "What is the ruling on playing the Qur'aan on the radio or on the recorder at home ; when someone is leaving the house to visit his family or relatives ? " If there is no noise around the recitation, then there is no problem if there is no one to shout or talk unnecessarily. Since it disrespects the Qur'an, and if it is left in such a way that no one is there or someone is listening , someone is silent or someone is asleep, then there is no problem.
