I've heard the term used, but I don't know what it means. I want to purchase a specific breed of dog, but I don't want to get a dog from a puppy mill. Is it safe to get a dog from a "backyard breeder"?

1 Answer

Answer :

This term is not officially defined with the American Kennel Club or any breed associations I researched or contacted. This tern is usually used in an unflattering way to describe amateur breeders who are not knowledgable about dog breeds and breeding, and who are not necessarily breeding dogs to improve the breed, but rather to make money. These breeders tend to breed for a single trait such as color, size, coat, markings, etc. and often the health of the dogs suffers as a result. There are many knowledgable, compassionate dog show breeders who operate small breeding operations at home and I have had personal dealings with some.  If you're considering getting a specific breed, look for a breeder who is active and involved in the activities, associations and shows of that breed. This will help you identify those who are passionate about the breed and therefore wish to breed the best to the best to improve the breed. The quality of the pup -- its health and temperament -- will likely be better from a breeder such as this.
