Gravity? Seriously, I think it has to do with the size (and weight) of the ear vs. the bone and muscle structure. Wild rabbits can have either type. If the ear occurred naturally in a particular rabbit population (rather than a trait that was bred for in domesticated rabbits), it was the result of natural selection either in response to some environmental stimulus or because the ear trait was paired with other traits that led to success for those rabbits.
