Witches come in many varieties, from the scary witches of Macbeth to the friendly witches of Harry Potter. Year after year, witches are popular Halloween costumes, in part because it takes so little effort to create a convincing witch costume. All you need is a robe and a wand, and you can pretend that you are all set to cast a magical spell. However, one aspect of a witch costume that is not necessary but that takes it one step further into more memorable territory is a hat. Witches tend to wear prominently point hats. Granted, this is not the norm in Harry Potter, with elderly professor Minerva McGonagall one of the few witches to latch onto such a fashion statement. However, in more traditional circles, a witch is not quite complete without a hat. If you go to a costume shop around Halloween, you will find no shortage of witches hats available for purchase. Some of them will be plain black, and these will usually be the least expensive. Others come fringed with colorful garlands, making them eye-catching. A popular new type of witch hat incorporates a design of spider webs in a rainbow array of colors. It's your call to decide whether you want to look scary, cute or elegant. All three are definite options when it comes to witch costumes, and the hat can go a long way toward setting the tone. You can also try making a witch hat yourself, though they are so cheap and readily available, it's probably easier to simply buy one. If you want to make one, you might consider just using cardboard to make a cone shape, and then you can decorate it however you like. The final result might end up being more wizard-like than witch-like, but they are all part of the same enchanted group, so that doesn't really matter. The important thing about a witch hat is that it should be pointy and that it can be a showcase for your personality if you decide to do something other than the traditional plain black. While you can dress up as a witch without one, a hat just makes the costume that much more fun.
