Children are like everyone else, some are more perceptive and able to articulate their thoughts and feelings better then others. I think most children are capable of profound understanding and moments of clarity. All three of my kids have taken me aback with off the cuff remarks that hit so close to home I sit back and marvel. Your father seems to have respected your feelings and handled the moment quite well.
