One common and unexpected cause of acute liver failure is an acetaminophen overdose, which can cause the liver to begin shutting down immediately. Acetaminophen is the primary ingredient of most over-the-counter pain medications, and it is a medication that many people feel is safe; in large doses, however, it can be deadly.Symptoms of Liver FailureThe initial stage of liver failure is often difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are similar to the symptoms of minor illnesses. When the liver first begins shutting down, it can cause the individual to feel nauseous and fatigued. Loss of appetite and diarrhea are also symptoms of the beginning stages of liver failure.Once the liver failure becomes more serious, the symptoms are a bit easier to recognize. Jaundice and a swollen abdomen are the first physical symptoms, and they should be addressed immediately. Individuals who are suffering from a failing liver may notice that they bleed very easily, that they are sleepy all the time and that they feel disoriented and confused. Liver failure can even cause an affected individual to go into a coma.
