How to Relieve a Stiff Neck
Getting a stiff neck is something everyone experiences once in a while, for various reasons. It can be quite annoying and inconvenient, but it’s nothing to worry about. Here are some things you can do to help relieve your stiff neck.
Take the pressure off your muscles by using a cervical brace in the meantime. You can buy those at therapy shops, or make one of your own. Simply place a rolled up towel around your shirt collar, tucked in at the neck.
The quickest way to relief is to get some simple painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin.
Put a pillow right under where the neck meets the curve of the spine while sleeping.
Use some heat therapy. This can take in the form of a hot shower, a hot compress or a hot water bottle.
Ask someone to massage your neck very gently.
If you experience stiff neck often, you may want to look into improving your posture. People who slouch, stand and sit incorrectly will most likely experience frequent neck pains. Make sure that your office computer screen is positioned just so that your head can remain on its natural posture. You can help improve poor posture by regular exercises such as stretching, weight training, dancing and yoga.
People who get stressed a lot tend to experience stiff neck often. Look for ways to relax, such as yoga and breathing exercises to help alleviate the stress. Try to find ways to have fun, and your neck will relax as well.
Avoid exposing your neck to cold. Cold drafts and cold weather can cause stiff neck. Close your windows before you sleep, and wear a light scarf on cold weather.
If your stiff neck does not go away within 24 hours, go see a doctor. Likewise, if your stiff neck is accompanied by fever, headache, drowsiness, numbness or confusion, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
